4-H National Science DayThe 4-H National Youth Science Day experiment coordinated by Dr. Claudette Smith of The Cooperative Extension Program was re-enacted at more than 450 gatherings in 276 counties across the United States alone. Those participants as well as the 260 Guilford County fifth graders who were on campus to conduct the 4-H2O experiment at the Alumni-Foundation Event Center have a curriculum enhancement with an enticing incentive. At the official 4H2O Web page, there’s a link to “The Green Team Challenge!” This challenge is an online learning module that allows young scientists to put the 4-H20 knowledge they acquired on Oct. 8 to work by using an online calculator to estimate their family’s carbon footprint. There’s also guidance and a pledge form for simple steps to make environmental improvement in their communities.

The Green Team Challenge!” will be open for inputs until Oct. 31. For procrastinators forced to choose between working through the learning module on Oct. 31 and Halloween candy, this particular homework assignment has a treat that leaves candy behind. Two of the young scientists who complete the module will be selected at random for new Apple iPads.
